16 Years of Faith, Service, and Empowerment
From Lenasia South to nine communities — the journey of Al-Iman Foundation since 2010.
How We Started
In 2010, a small group of South African Muslims looked at the gap between what their communities had and what they needed — and decided to do something about it. They called it Al-Iman Foundation. Iman, in Arabic, means faith. And faith was the foundation they built on.
At the start, it was small: a few volunteers, a handful of beneficiaries, and the simple commitment to help where help was needed. But word spread. Donors believed. Volunteers showed up. And Al-Iman grew — branch by branch, family by family — into the foundation that today serves over 5,000 beneficiaries across nine communities in Johannesburg South.
Along the way, we registered as an NPC (2014), opened our pilot school in Hospital Hills with 600+ learners, launched the Skills Development Academy (2016), expanded our orphan sponsorship to 200+ children annually, distributed 30,000 Iftar meals each Ramadan, and facilitated over 2,000 Shahadas in 2024.
Today, we stand at the threshold of our most ambitious project yet — Lakeside College Hub, a R7 million vocational and technology college that will train 250 vulnerable youth every year and become self-sustaining by Year 1.
Sixteen years in, our work is far from finished. Every meal we deliver, every orphan we sponsor, every shahada we witness — it all flows from the same source we started with: faith that the world can be more just, more compassionate, more whole.
We are Al-Iman. And we are just getting started.
