Common questions

What is Zakat?
Zakat is the obligatory annual charity (2.5% of qualifying wealth) that purifies the rest of your wealth. It's one of the five pillars of Islam.
What is Nisab?
Nisab is the minimum wealth threshold above which Zakat becomes obligatory. We use the silver standard (~595g of silver), which is currently ≈ R 12,000.
When do I pay Zakat?
Once your wealth has been at or above Nisab for one full lunar year (Hawl), Zakat is due. Many Muslims pay during Ramadan for the additional reward.
Does this include my house and car?
No. Personal-use items (your home, car, clothing, household goods) are not Zakatable. Only liquid wealth, gold, silver, investments, business stock, and receivables.
